7th Middlesex arrived in France in March 1915 and joined 23 Brigade, 8th Division. During the summer of 1915 they were deployed in the Laventie sector of the front, near the small village of La Boutillerie. On 25th August, 1915, a patrol stumbled upon a concealed machine gun post and 2nd Lieutenant Godward, from Enfield and Private Gilbert, were both killed.  However Private Gilbert was able to throw a grenade as he fell which dealt with the machine gun and its crew.
